Magazine Analysis

Kerrang Magazine:
The company that produces the magazine is Kerrang and according to the publisher’s website the target audience is those who are interested in rock music from ages 18-30. This is shown as the magazine is about a lot of rock singers and also it keeps referring to the audience as “rock fans” The magazine costs £2.20 and it is published every week. The circulation for the Kerrang magazine is 41,125 (43,253 / 52,272). The magazine is distributed in shops and also online which is marketed and promoted on the magazine itself. The Kerrang magazine is not mentioned on the NRS (National relationship Survey) therefore may not be as popular as other rock magazines.

The title on the magazine which is located on the top is “Kerrang” this sends out to the audience that it is a magazine which is about rock music as “Kerrang” is the sound that an electric guitar makes, and an electric guitar is a rock instrument thus lets the audience know it’s a rock magazine. The title is written in white which is bold and big it contrasts from the black background which makes it stand out more.
The main image on the front cover is the rock band ‘good charlotte’ which consists of five men. The men have very angry facial expressions but with sly grins which complement the genre of magazine as rock music is known as a very wild, mad genre. They are also looking straight at the camera making eye contact which makes the audience feel more involved and feel as if the bands looking directly at them. The main artist in the band has his fists clenches which portray he is strong, aggressive and tough which relates to rock music as rock music is displayed as aggressive and loud. The band are mostly in leather and vests with many tattoos which presents them as rebels to the audience this also relates to the genre as rock music and artists are very rebellious which is illustrated in the lyrics of many rock songs. There are also many other images on the magazine which are all of different rock artists, this also lets the audience know that Kerrang is a rock magazine and that many information and interviews of the rock artists are featured inside the magazine.
There are cover lines which explain what the stories inside the magazine are about “Paramore- back to where it all began” this portrays that the double page spread is about the rock band Paramore. Also another cover line says "murder dolls" and "black bride veils" this symbolizes a gloomy and terrifying thought this relates to rock music as rock music is depressing and gloomy.
The magazine has a colour scheme of black, white and red which are all bright, bold colours. The font is very bold and big which matches the genre as rock is a very bold, unique genre. The language of the magazine is informal and also is very direct to the audience as if the cover is talking to them.

The magazine has 60 pages and about 36 pages of adverts. The adverts mostly advertise artists, albums, concerts, and competitions. All of the articles are about different rock artists and how they became so successful or how they performed and their experiences from previous concerts. The magazine also includes different competitions and activities. There are in total 7 double page spreads which are all about different artists experiences about fame and success or about their experiences at their concerts.
There is a advertorial which i am unsure about whether it is a advert or article as it is advertising gigs but also involves a interview.
Kerrang’s house style is very simple but unique. The colours used for this specific magazine are red, white and black although it changes on every magazine. The title and magazine on every magazine is always the same, either the background is white with a bold black title saying ‘Kerrang’ or either a black background with a bold white title saying ‘Kerrang’ this is done so that the title stands out contrasting from the background and is seen as very eye catching to the audience. The main image is always of a different rock artist and in the middle, however sometimes it overlaps the titles but although sometimes the title overlaps the main image. The contents always consists of many images and is set out as a list so that it is easy for the audience to read. The house style suits the target audience as the colours used are very bright and go with the rock theme; also it has more writing than images which the audience would prefer as they are older therefore would prefer to read about what is inside the magazine. The quotes are very big, bold and bright therefore anyone who is a rock fan would immediately be drawn to the magazine and read it.
